Netflix and Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps Entertainment is set to bring a new limited series to the streamer. All the Light We Cannot See will feature four episodes, all directed by Levy.
This series is based on the novel of the same title by Anthony Doerr, published in 2014. This novel has won a Pulitzer Prize (2015), Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction (2015) and spent more than 200 weeks on the New York Times bestsellers list.
Levy will also produce with Dan Levine and Josh Barry of 21 Laps Entertainment and screenplay writer Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders).
If you’ve been waiting on the edge of your seat for news about the upcoming show, Netflix has announced the official release date. The complete four-part series will be released on Thursday, Nov. 2, 2023! Like always, you can expect the show to drop on Netflix at 12:00 a.m. PT/3:00 a.m. ET.
This story is set in occupied France during WWII. A young blind girl, Marie Laure, after the Nazis occupy her home, must flee the citadel of Saint-Maulo. Werner is a German soldier, orphaned as a child, drafted into Hitler’s Youth Academy.
They cross paths as they try to survive amidst the destruction surrounding them. It is a tale of how kindness shines during the darkest days.
Here’s the official synopsis via Netflix Media Center:
"All The Light We Cannot See is a groundbreaking limited series that follows the story of Marie-Laure, a blind French girl and her father, Daniel LeBlanc, who flee German-occupied Paris with a legendary diamond to keep it from falling into the hands of the Nazis. Relentlessly pursued by a cruel Gestapo officer who seeks to possess the stone for his own selfish means, Marie-Laure and Daniel soon find refuge in St. Malo, where they take up residence with a reclusive uncle who transmits clandestine radio broadcasts as part of the resistance. Yet here in this once-idyllic seaside city, Marie-Laure’s path also collides inexorably with the unlikeliest of kindred spirits: Werner, a brilliant teenager enlisted by Hitler’s regime to track down illegal broadcasts, who instead shares a secret connection to Marie-Laure as well as her faith in humanity and the possibility of hope."
In her first-ever role, Aria Mia Loberti, who is blind, has been cast as the older Marie-Laure for this series. Although she has no formal acting training, Loberti beat out thousands of hopefuls for the role. She read the book and decided to try out for the part. In addition, newcomer Nell Sutton plays a young Marie-Laure.
